Preliminary Task


For our preliminary task, Lauren and I decided to re-create the music video 'four, five seconds', by Rihanna, Paul McCartney and Kanye West. Our aim was to try and replicate the exact shot from the real music video. Although it did not turn out exactly the same, we are still pleased with our final result as we did learn a lot from doing this, which will help us with our final music video.

In terms of pre-production, we spent a long time researching popular music music videos in the 'pop' genre. We used Youtube to look at a variety of music videos including: Budapest, Alesha Dixon and Four, Five, Seconds. We decided on 'Four, Five, Seconds' as it had shots and editing techniques we wanted to try and use i.e. colour grading and silhouette effect. Using a online website we created a detailed storyboard of the first minute of 'Four, Five Seconds' which included pictures of each shot we wanted to replicate and how long they will be shown for. In terms of location planning, we wanted to use a green screen. We therefore filmed our task in our media classroom where we had access to a very large green screen. As a result of this we had few safety hazards and a small risk assessment. Due to the minimalistic style of the music video, we only needed a guitar and black denim jacket which we used on two of our singers. Rihanna wore minimal makeup so we recreated this look, making Isadora look very natural.

When filming our preliminary task, we took multiple shots to ensure it was a close copy of the real music video. Whilst filming the music video, we had Youtube playing 'four, five seconds' making it easier for our singers to imitate the actions and learn the song lyrics. We also used normal lighting as well as studio lights to brighten our performer and green screen so we could get the best quality possible.  To get a variety of shots we used the zoom effect on the Sony NEX-VG30EH PAL Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Power Zoom Lens which was very effective. 

During our post-production stage we used Final Cut Pro to edit our work. We definitely preferred Final Cut Pro to iMovie as it not only gave us more options when it came to editing but gave us a better outcome as we found it easier to use. We had to use a Youtube Converter to download the song to import into Final Cut which we had to match to the performer lip-syncing. Before we did this we had to mute the clips we had filmed incase our performer was ahead or behind of the song. We used colour grading throughout our preliminary task, using a black and white effect, which was the exact same to the real video. Another editing technique we used was creating a silhouette, as we previously said it turned out differently as we expected however we still liked it.

To conclude, We learnt a lot of new techniques as well as developing our skills both on final cut pro and when using the camera to film various shots.
